Open Positions for Postdoctoral Fellows in Inflammation Biology 

Short Summary: The Bergthaler laboratory at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria is looking for Postdoctoral Fellows to investigate fundamental molecular questions in the areas of infection, inflammation and pathology. Hypothesis- and data-driven approaches are combined to address pertinent pathophysiological questions on the organ and organism level. Recent studies include Schliehe C et al. Nature Immunology 2015, Bhattacharya A et al. Immunity 2015, Khamina K et al. PLoS Pathogens 2017 and Kosack L et al. Cancer Cell 2019 (In Press). 

We look for innovative scientists who wish to make a difference to our fundamental understanding of inflammation. How are inflammatory processes initiated, regulated and resolved? When does this lead to pathology? How may inflammation be harnessed for immunotherapeutic opportunities? 

The host laboratory is interested in local vs. systemic inflammation, immunoregulation, organismal immunometabolism, inter-organ communication and tissue pathology. We employ cutting-edge technologies (e.g. mouse genetics, virus reverse genetics, single cell sequencing, metabolomics, metabolite tracing, CRISPR screens, computational biology) in order to unravel the molecular underpinnings of inflammation. 

Several projects are available which will benefit from established in vivo disease models, preliminary data, strong bioinformatics support, access to world class core facilities (e.g. sequencing, metabolomics, proteomics, drug screens) and an international and highly collaborative environment. 

Your Profile: 

+ PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Immunology, Virology, Molecular Biology, Genomics, Epigenetics, Tissue Biology, Computational Biology, Technology Development) or MD/DVM degree. 
+ Successful publication track record with at least one first-author paper in a peer-reviewed journal. 
+ Critical, creative, interdisciplinary and proactive mindset. 
+ Team player with strong communication skills. 

The Lab: The principal investigator Dr. Bergthaler received training in premier laboratories at the University and ETH Zurich, University of Tokyo and at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. His team consists of nine members representing seven nationalities and different scientific backgrounds, who closely collaborate across projects. The Bergthaler lab is supported by competitive funding from the European Research Council (ERC), the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
