Skill Development Program on “Laboratory Animals in Biomedical Research” (LABR)

(CSIR-Integrated Skill initiative) As part of CSIR-Integrated Skill initiative, a three weeks certificate course titled ‘Laboratory Animals in Biomedical Research’ (Course Code: IICT-LABR-2019-20) is being offered, under the SKILL DEVELOPMENT program. Online applications are invited from eligible candidates, who have completed their graduation/post-graduation and have a strong desire to pursue career in animal research in Industrial CROs, Pharma and Biotech companies.

About the Course: It is observed that graduate/post-graduate students require skills of laboratory animals handling for biomedical research. Moreover, most of the Pharma and Biotech companies conduct preclinical studies on lab animals and expect to have knowledge on basic handling. This will have direct impact on their career opportunities and their employability, especially in industrial CROs, Pharma and Biotech companies etc. This skill program will enhance the required capabilities to bridge gap between academia and industry. The course is practical intensive with over 140 + hours of hands on Training and class room sessions.

The Skill Development Program on Laboratory Animals would focus on:

 Basic techniques of Laboratory animal handling
 Hands on training in laboratory animal handling, and experimental techniques
 Sentinel health monitoring of Laboratory animals colony
 Breeding and genetic monitoring programme
 CPCSEA/IAEC Regulations, animal ethics and welfare
 Principles of 3Rs in lab animals research
 Occupational hazards and safe practices in the animal house
 Application process for Animal house certifications (CPCSEA, GLP, AAALAC etc) in Indian scenario
 Design and conduct of selected animal experiments employing suitable disease models
 Preclinical safety assessment studies for drug/vaccine development

Outcomes:
 Provide the basic knowledge on housing and husbandry of lab animals
 Acquisition of basic knowledge in diseases and health monitoring of lab animals
 Acquire the knowledge about working in animal facility
 The post graduate students will be trained for handling animals, routes of administration, observation of animals for preclinical studies as per the standard of industrial CROs and Pharma companies
 Opportunity to know about the various disease animal models
 Imparting knowledge on GLP and AAALAC certification process for animal facility

Evaluation of the Trainees: Evaluation will be through continuous assessment by using mock tests, Questionnaires and group discussions.

Certification: A certificate will be issued only to the successful candidates at the end of the course.

Selection Procedure: The selection process will be as per CSIR rules and as per the eligibility criteria for the candidates: minimum 55% (or equivalent) in M.Sc (life science) / M.Pharm/ B.V.Sc / B.Pharm. Maximum intake of the candidates is 20 per batch.
