PhD fellows in Biological Sciences

The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen is offering up to four fully funded PhD scholarships within the Biological Sciences commencing 1 November 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of the scientific environment
The Department of Biology is among the largest Departments at the University of Copenhagen. It employs 475 academic and technical staff and hosts research programmes and teaching curricula that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. University rankings typically place the field of biology/biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen first in Denmark and among the top 30 universities internationally. In addition to a PhD-programme, three BSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine) and four MSc study programmes (biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine, bioinformatics) engage close to 2000 students. The successful candidates will join the lively group of 150 PhD students studying at the Department of Biology and participate in the many exciting events and activities organised by the PhD student network and the Department, including the annual PhD day, the biannual BIO conference, weekly research seminars, and career fairs. Each successful applicant will choose a supervisor at one of the 10 sections at the Department of Biology:
Job description
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:
  • To define, manage and carry through your research project
  • Attend PhD courses equivalent to 30 ECTS
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
Formal requirements
Applicants should hold a MSc degree in biology, molecular biomedicine, biochemistry, bioinformatics or closely related field with excellent results. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience. 

We are seeking highly motivated and ambitious individuals with good interpersonal and communication skills. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 325.625 (approx. €43,400) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 44,980). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. Afterwards an assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the selected applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee. The final selection of a successful candidate will be made after personal interviews where the selected candidates will have the opportunity to present their past research experience, ideas for a PhD research project and motivation for a career in science.
The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science, and to select a supervisor at the Department of Biology. Together with the supervisor, the candidate will prepare a detailed research plan for the PhD project.
