Research Associate, Long-term Research & Monitoring

Background

The Nature Conservation Foundation recognizes that long-term research and monitoring are essential for understanding complex socio-ecological systems and form a key component of science-based conservation. We are looking to hire a Research Associate who will work with multiple NCF programmes to synthesize existing long-term datasets, and to develop a vision and strategy for future long-term research and monitoring within NCF.

Details

Title: Research Associate

Tenure: One year, and extendable annually based on mutual agreement

Location: This position is ordinarily based in Bangalore or Mysore (negotiable), but given the current circumstances, remote work is permitted until the situation eases. Some travel to field sites will be required, when it becomes possible.

Pay scale: Commensurate with experience and standardised by Department of Science and Technology guidelines.

Tasks

  • Lead and publish research on the impacts of global drivers, such as climate and land use change, on natural ecosystems, people, and their interactions, drawing on long-term datasets across NCF landscapes and programmes. Potential themes include phenological cycles and climate change, biodiversity and land use change, life history and population dynamics, and spatio-temporal dynamics of human-wildlife conflict.

  • Envision, design, and implement ideas for future long-term research.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with teams, and mentor students, from different programmes at NCF.

Qualifications and desired capabilities

Required

  • MSc in ecology, wildlife science, environmental science, or other relevant disciplines.

  • PhD and at least 2 years post-PhD experience leading ecological research projects, or at least 5 years experience leading ecological research projects for non-PhDs.

  • Proficiency in data management, statistical modeling, and relevant software applications

  • Demonstrable evidence of scientific writing and communication (e.g., journal articles, book chapters, data visualisation apps).

Desirable

  • Experience with relational databases and relevant software applications.

  • Experience with communicating science to wider audiences.

  • Capacity to work collaboratively with scientists and students.
