ADMISSION PROCEDURE AND SCHEDULE – ODD SEM (August)- 2022-23
(Semester Commencing from August 2022)
Ph.D. in ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCES, COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING,
LAW, MANAGEMENT, JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION and LIBERAL ARTS
General
In line with its philosophy of being research and innovation driven, the Bennett University, Greater
Noida has been offering Ph.D. programs since the year of its inception, in 2016 itself.
At present, the Ph.D. programs are being offered by:
a) The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) offering Ph.D program in the following
streams:
a. Biotechnology
b. Electronics and Communication Engineering,
c. Mechanical Engineering,
d. Mathematics
e. Physics
f. Chemistry
b) The School of Computer Science Engineering and Technology (SCSET) offering Ph.D program in
CSE.
c) The School of Law (SOL) offering Ph.D. program in Law.
d) The School of Management (SOM) offering Ph.D program in Management.
• Areas of specialization for SOM: Marketing, Organizational Behaviour & Human Resource
Management, Finance, Economics, Operations Management and Business Policy & Strategy.
e) Times School of Media (TSOM) offering Ph.D. program in Journalism and Mass Communication.
• Areas of specialization for TSOM: Candidates can choose to work of any of the mass
communication platforms including, Print Journalism, TV Journalism, Digital Journalism,Advertising
& Marketing, Radio & Podcasting and Film Studies. The school also encourages its scholars to take
up topics which involve interdisciplinary research.
f) School of Liberal Arts (SoLA) offering Ph.D program in Economics, English Literature,
Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology.
The Ph.D. students are required to undertake advanced level course work, up to specified credits as per
rules, including courses in research methodology. Further they are required to qualify in the comprehensive
examination and get the Research Plan approved by their RAC at the end of course work.only thereafter,

they may register as scholars and take up intensive research work under the guidance of supervisor(s)
onspecific areas/problems, for a minimum duration of three years. The research work is expected to result
in new findings contributing to the knowledge in the chosen field. Doctoral research program gives an
opportunity to scholars to demonstrate their analytical, innovative and independent thinking, leading to
creativity and application of knowledge. Scholars are required to deliver seminars/showcase their research
progress, regularly and require publishing their work, as specified in Ph.D. rules. Finally, they shall be
required to submit the thesis, embodying their research findings for the award of the Ph.D. Degree.
Financial Support will be provided to selected full time Ph.D. students on vacancy basis, in the form of
Ph.D. Assistantship.
Eligibility Criteria:
For Computer Science Engineering and Technology
Academic Requirements (Minimum Qualifications): 50% Marks or a minimum CGPA of 5.5 on a
10-point scale in relevant program in M.Tech/MCA/ME/MSc/MS in any discipline from recognized
University.
For Engineering and Applied Sciences
Academic Requirements (Minimum Qualifications): 60% Marks or a minimum CGPA of 6.5 on a10-
point scale in relevant program in M.E./M.Tech./M.Sc./M.Phil.
For Law To be eligible for applying for admission to Ph.D. Degree, the applicant should have:
(i) Obtained a master’s degree in Law/any other discipline from a recognized University with not
less than 55% marks or its equivalent; provided that candidates with qualifications in social
sciences, humanities and sciences may be admitted to the program, if the research they wish
to pursue, interfaces with the discipline of law.
(ii) Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying examination but awaiting results are also
eligible to apply, provided that the result of the qualifying examination shall be submitted by
the candidate at the time of Registration failing which their candidature shall be cancelled.
(iii) Applicants with more than 3 years industry/ teaching/ practicing/ managerial/ professional
experience would be given preference.
For Management
(i) Candidates for admission to the Ph.D Program shall have a Master's degree, or a professional
degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory
body, with at least 60 % marks or with Aggregate CGPA of 6.5 on a scaleof 10 (or an equivalent
grade in a point scale wherever grading system isfollowed).
(ii) Professional qualification such as CA/ ICWA/CS with any Under-graduate Degree are also
eligible to apply. Any equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by
an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an
authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory
authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and
standards of educational institutions.
For Journalism and Mass Communication
(i) Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program should have a master’s degree in Journalism and
Mass Communication with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in
UGC 7-point scale. Candidates with a master’s degree in other domains of social sciences
are also eligible to apply, provided their area of research is essentially from mass
communication. Research can be conducted in English or Hindi.
For School of Liberal Arts
(i) Since the School of Liberal Arts is strongly devoted to inter-disciplinary research,
candidates with a master’s degree in any discipline from a recognized University with
minimum 55% marks (or its equivalent grade) will be allowed to apply. The suitability of the
educational qualifications will be determined by the school based on the area that the
candidate wants to undertake the research on.
Note: Candidates who have appeared previously for Ph.D. admission, and not selected,shall
not be eligible to apply for minimum one year, since last attempt.
Before filling Applications Candidates must read following and ensure:
(i) Merely filling an application form does not entitle a candidate for admission. The admission
is purely merit based. The University reserves the right to cancel/revoke its offer and/or
acceptance of provisional admission at any point in time; No refund of application fee is
allowed in any condition, whatsoever.
(ii) Candidate cannot claim the seat, merely because it is available. University Admission
Committee shall decide the minimum cut offs for merit in various programs and same shall
be final.
(iii) Candidate must fulfil all the eligibility criteria as laid down above if he/she wishes to be
considered for admission.
(iv) Candidates applying for Law program must also upload preliminary research proposal,
along with their application. The preliminary research proposal should be around 2000 words
including hypothesis, statement of problem, research methodology and a preliminary survey
of literature. All research proposals will be screened through the anti-plagiarism software.
Applications received without research proposal shall not be accepted.
(v) Candidates applying for Management program - Candidates are required to upload
preliminary research proposal along with the application form. The candidates are encouraged
to write about 2000 words including, background to the research problem, preliminary
literature review, proposed theoretical model, proposed research methodology and expected
outcomes.Application received without research proposal shall not be processed further.
(vi) Candidates applying for Journalism and Mass Communication program- Candidates
are required to submit a 2000 words Statement of Purpose along with the application form.
The SoP should include their intended research topic, problem statement, preliminary
literature review, proposed research methodology along with a paragraph explaining the
candidate’s eligibility and experience in the area to take up the work.
(vii) Candidates applying for Liberal Arts program - Candidates are required to upload
preliminary research proposal along with the application form. The candidates are encouraged
to write about 2000 words including, background to the research problem, preliminary
literature review, proposed theoretical model, proposed research methodology and expected
outcomes.Application received without research proposal shall not be processed further.
(viii) Candidates applying for Biotechnology program - Candidates are required to upload
preliminary research proposal along with the application form.
(ix) Candidates must produce certificate of proof of the above conditions at the time of
Registration, failing which, they will be disqualified, and provisional admission offer shall be
cancelled.
Shortlisting and Selection:
(a) The shortlisting of applications for admission test/interview will be done by the doctoral
admission committee of respective schools, based on the profile of applicant as provided in
the application form.
(b) The applicants who fulfil the eligibility criteria and are shortlisted, shall be put through:
(A) For SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCES (SEAS)
(i) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) - a written test conducted by the
University/School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
(ii) The process of Interview by a nominated committee of the School of
Engineering and Applied Sciences.
(iii) During the personal interview, the applicant will be assessed on interest and
motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on chosen area of research and
past academic and research performances.
(B) For SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
(SCSET)
(i) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) - a written test conducted by the
University/SCSET.
(ii) The process of Interview by a nominated committee of the SCSET.
(iii) During the personal interview, the applicant will be assessed on his interest and
motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on chosen area of research and
his past academic and research performances.
(C) For School of Law (SoL)
(i) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) - a written test conducted by the
University/School of Law.
(ii) Presentation of Preliminary Research Proposal and Interview: The
candidates appearing in BRAT, shall be required to present their preliminary
research proposal, (candidates thus, will have to submit/upload the same along
with online application). The candidate shall also be interviewed to asses his/her
interest and motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on chosen area of
research and his/her past academic and research performances.
(D) For School of Management
(i) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) - a written test conducted by the
University/School of Management.
(ii) The shortlisted students after written examination shall be invited for an
interview/viva-voce to be organized by the SOM. The candidates would be
required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a
duly constituted Department Research Committee. The interview/viva voce shall
consider the following aspects, viz. whether:
(a) the candidate possesses the
competence for the proposed research;
(b) the research work can be suitably
undertaken at the University/School;
(c) the proposed area of research can
contribute to new/additional knowledge.
(E) For Times School of Media (TSoM)
(i) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) - a written test conducted by the
University/Times School of Media.
(ii) The shortlisted candidates after written examination shall be invited for the
presentation and viva before a selection committee. The presentation should
demonstrate the candidate’s knowledge of the subject domain and his/her
research orientation and abilities. The presentation should be aligned with the
candidate's Statement of Purpose submitted along with the application form.
(F) For School of Liberal Arts (SoLA)
For SoLA, the students in the PhD program shall be admitted through three steps:
(i) Evaluating the statement of purpose, describing the area of interest of the
researcher and how the education/work experience enables the candidate to

undertake the research.
(ii) An entrance exam (Candidates who have cleared the NET or UGC/CSIR (JRF)
/ICAR or SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship holder shall be exempted from the
entrance examination during the period of validity of the concerned test. They will
however be required to appear for the Personal Interview.
(iii) Interview
Details of Written Tests (Weightage, Syllabus, Duration etc.)
The weightage for admission, in the written examination shall be 70% marks viz 30% marks in the
interview.
(A) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT - Engineering and Applied Sciences)
(a) The syllabus of examination for the written test shall be same as for UGCNET/CSIR/GATE/GRE examinations:
(b) Each candidate shall take the written test in relevant area /field to the student’s
discipline.
(c) The test will typically be of one-hour duration. The questions in the test may be both
objective as well as subjective.
(d) For Biotechnology: Submission of research statement (to test the writing skill of the
candidate). The question paper will be completely objective for duration of 1.5 hours.
(B) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT - Law)
(a) The syllabus of the examination for the written test shall comprise of contemporary
issues on public policy development.
(b) The written test will also assess the candidate based on the interface of law with
humanities /Business Administration/ Science & Technology/English with sufficient
options to choose from student’s relevant discipline. The test will be typically of 2-
hour duration and the questions in the test may beobjective and/or subjective.
(C) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT - Management)
(a) Duration – 2 hours
(b) Number of Sections – Two - Each carrying 50 percent weightage and only subjective
questions will be asked
Section A:
Research Methodology:
The syllabus for Research Methodology section shall be same as for any course on
Business Research Methods and Processes in Social Sciences. The candidates are
expected to demonstrate knowledge of research processes and understanding of
quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. Also, the candidates should be able
to identify, explain, and compare, the key elements of a research proposal/report.
Section B:
Principles of Management:
The syllabus for Principles of Management shall include, knowledge about basic
functions and skills under management, management theories and philosophies and
their application, understanding of the relationship between strategic, tactical, and
operational plans. Also, they should be able to recognize the part communication plays
in the management function.
(D) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT - Media)
(a) The syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of general aptitude and knowledge of media
domains, basis research methodology and communication research methods and theories of mass communication.
(b) The test will be of 90 minutes and shall consist of objectivequestions.
(c) Candidates are expected to pass the written test with minimum 50% marks to be able to
qualify for the viva.
(E) Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Liberal Arts)
(a) Duration: 2 hours
(b) 25 marks for the general test, consisting of tests of vocabulary, comprehension,
logic and data interpretation.
(c) 45 marks for the subject test.
(d) The candidate must score minimum 50% marks in the entrance test to qualify
for the interview.
(e) The candidate’s competence and required knowledge for the proposed
research;
(f) the research work area matches with the research interests of the School’s
faculty members
(g) the proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge. The
candidates will have to upload the research proposal at the time of submitting
the application form.
There shall be no exemptions from Written test andInterviews except School or Liberal Arts.
Please refer para-F (b) of section: “Shortlisting and Selection”.
(F) The University reserves the right torevise or change the pattern of admission/written
testwith prior notification.
Schedules of Admissions:
1. The University opens Ph.D admissions with defined number of seats in different categories (Full
time/Part Time/Sponsored and applicability of Teaching Assistantship) and may review and allocate
additional seats subject to capacity
2. The call for PhD admissions remains open throughout academic year for programmes where seats are
vacant out of approved numbers
3. The Schools/ Departments conduct entrance test at Quarterly/ Semester/ Annual intervals as per
university rules, followed by interview and submit results for further approvals and notification
4. The student should fulfill minimum attendance rules as per university regulations.
5. The student rejected in 1st attempt will not be allowed to appear in BRAT at least for one year as per
University PhD Ordinances.

(v) Date of commencement of Program: 9th August 2022 for the 2
nd batch
(vi) Venue - Bennett University Campus,

*The dates for Written Test and Interview as given above are tentative for University-wide
admissions across Schools for a particular academic year. School will conduct BRAT through
rolling mode in between a semester, based on vacancies. Any changes in the dates will be
indicated on the University’s website.
APPLICATION PROCESS
1. How to Fill the Application Form: The students fill the application forms online:
(a) Apply on-line using net banking/credit/debit card at application portal i.e. ‘NoPaperForms’
which can be accessed through www.bennett.edu.in >>> Admissions. Follow the guidelines
thereafter.
(b) Candidates applying for Law/ Management programs must also upload preliminary
research proposal, as explained above along with application. Applications received without
same shall not be accepted.
2. Cost of Form - Rs 1000/-.
3. Admission granted to student may be revoked for noncompliance/not meeting the admission criteria/
being found ineligible, even if same is detected at a later date. All admissions will be subject to
verification of facts from the original certificates/ documents of the candidates. The decision of the
Admission Committee of the University regarding the eligibility of any applicant shall be final.
Institutional Fee*
The fee shall be Rs. 60,000/- per year. It shall be payable in two instalments of Rs 30,000/-per
semester.
(For candidates registered under NRI/International category*
- the fee shall be US$ 1500 per annum payable in two instalments of US $750 per semester.
Security Deposit
– Rs. 30000/- (One time, payable at time of Registration, Refundable after completion
or withdrawal from the program)
An additional mandatory Examination Fees Charges of INR 10,000 per year, payable twice at INR 5,000
at the time of registration in the semester.
*The fee structure may be revised by the management from time to time.
Ph.D. Assistantship:
FinancialSupport will beprovided to selected FulltimePh.D. students on vacancy basis, in theform of
Ph.D. Assistantship, subject to terms and conditions as per University rules.
Slab 1. INR 25 thousand per month plus hostel accommodation on twin sharing basis /food and
requiring 8 hours Teaching Assistantship per week.
Slab 2. INR 40 thousand per month (with no hostel accommodation and food) and requiring 8
hours Teaching Assistantship per week.
Notes:
(a) Conditions for continuation and total duration of applicability of the Ph.D. Assistantship shall
be as per the Ph.D. regulations of the University.
(b) The teaching load for Assistantship shall be verified and authenticated at
Departmental/School level and approved by Dean (R&C)
(c) The management reserves the right to revise the rates/terms of TA ship from time to time.

*Conditions to be eligible for NRI/International Students Quota
(a) NRI/PIO/OCI
(i) PIO (Person of Indian Origin). A person who or whose any of ancestors were Indian
national and who is presently holding another country’s citizenship/ nationality i.e.
he/she is holding foreign passport.
(ii) OCI (Overseas Citizen of India). A person registered as “Overseas Citizen of India”
(OCI) cardholder under section 7A of the Citizenship Act, 1955.
(iii) NRI shall be a student, whose mother or father, first degree relation including the real
brother and sister or grandparents both paternal and maternal are NRIs.
(iv) This quota may also be availed by wards of NRI persons, who should be the nearest
relation to include real brother and sister of father and mother i.e. real uncle and real
aunt, first degree-paternal and maternal cousins. However, such persons, who have
looked after such student as the guardian, need to produce an evidence to the effect,
along with an affidavit signed by authorities in country where such person is residing.
(v) NRI, in this context shall imply an Indian Citizen who stays abroad for
employment/carrying on business or vocation outside India or stays abroad under
circumstances indicating an intention for an uncertain duration of stay abroad.
(vi) Students having done their PG from foreign University and falling under categories (i)
to (v) above shall be treated under NRI category admission.
(b) International Student - All students who are foreign country passport holders and have
passed their PG exams from a foreign University.
