Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, is a premier institute dedicated to the intense multi-disciplinary research supporting the ambitious nuclear energy programme of India. BARC is empowering young, talented and motivated students to contribute to path-breaking discoveries in frontier areas of scientific research and cutting-edge technologies by offering Junior Research Fellowships in the areas of Physical, Chemical and Life Sciences. Applications are invited from interested students for the award of Junior Research Fellowships at this Centre. 

All the selected candidates will register for Ph.D. in Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed to be University of Department of Atomic Energy

1. AREAS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS IN SCIENCE DISCIPLINES 

Physical Sciences Charged Particle Accelerator Development, Nuclear Physics using Accelerators, Astrophysics using gamma-ray Telescopes, Plasma Physics, Laser based Physics, Spectroscopy of Atoms and Molecules, Condensed Matter Physics at low temperature, High Pressure and Magnetic fields, Quantum Materials, Crystallography, Thin films, Nanomaterials, Optics, Physics of sensors and detectors, Synchrotron Radiation and Neutron scattering based experiments and Computational & Theoretical Physics. 

Chemical Sciences Materials Chemistry, Solid State and High Temperature Chemistry, Nuclear Materials, Nano materials, Electrochemistry, Laser Spectroscopy, Radiation and Photochemistry, Advanced Separation Techniques, Analytical Sciences, Catalysis, Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage, Chemical Sensors, Polymers, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Nuclear and Radiochemistry, Actinide Chemistry, Radiation Processing, Radiopharmaceuticals, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients 

Life Sciences Cancer Biology, Diagnostics, Therapeutics, Immunology, Microbiome, Targeted Therapy, Functional Organic Materials, Radiation Biology, Nuclear Medicine, Structural Biology, Prokaryotic Stress Biology, Bioremediation, CRISPR Biology, TB Diagnostics & Treatment, Mutation Breeding, Plant & Agriculture Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Radiation Treatment of Food, Food Preservation & Packaging, Biosensors and Pest Control, Biofilms, Biofouling and Thermal Ecology. 

The Centre also encourages high quality inter-disciplinary research in areas relevant to its programmes. 

2. AGE LIMIT : The candidate must be an Indian national. The candidate should be less than 28 years of age as on 01-08-2025. Age relaxation is applicable up to 3 years in case of Other Backward Class Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) applicants, 5 years in case of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants and 10 years in case of persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD) applicants. 

Note: ONLY SSC/ MATRICULATION CERTIFICATE OR BIRTH CERTIFICATE WILL BE ACCEPTED AS PROOF OF DATE OF BIRTH, NO SUBSEQUENT REQUEST FOR CHANGE SHALL BE ENTERTAINED.  

3. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Candidates should have consistently good academic record and 

A. ONLY those candidates who have successfully cleared and have valid certificate for at least one of the following national level examination will be shortlisted for interview at BARC, Mumbai. Applications will be scrutinized and suitability of candidates for interview will be decided on the basis of their academic performance and qualifying examination. The recommendation / decision of the Selection Committee will be final and binding. 

a. UGC-CSIR-NET Fellowship (SLET/ Lectureship not eligible) 
b. JEST Score 
c. ICMR-JRF Test, ICAR-JRF Test 
d. DBT-JRB Biotechnology eligibility Test 
e. GATE Score in Physics/ Chemistry /Life Sciences/ Biotechnology 
f. JGEEBILS Candidates should clearly indicate the details of the above qualifying examinations and it should be valid as on 01-08-2025. The candidate should submit the proof at the time of interview. 

B. (i) Candidates should have secured minimum of 60% aggregate in B.Sc. and 55% aggregate in M.Sc. from a recognized University. 

(ii) Candidates with five years integrated M.Sc. / B.S-M.S. (Single degree) should have secured minimum of 55% aggregate. 

(iii) Candidates having a 4-year / 8-semester bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate are also eligible to apply. 

(iv) Candidates those who have completed but awaiting the final results of M.Sc. Degree may also apply. However, such candidates should necessarily upload copies of the mark sheets of B.Sc. Degree and a copy of M.Sc. first year mark sheet(s) along with the application. Such candidates should have scored marks at least 55% aggregate until the previous semester/year in M. Sc. and minimum aggregate of 60% in B.Sc. level. Such candidates eventually joining the Fellowship should acquire aggregate marks of 55% in the M. Sc. qualifying degree, failing which candidate will not be allowed to continue in the programme. 

(v) Candidates those who have completed but awaiting the final results of five years integrated M.Sc. / B.S-M.S. (Single degree) may also apply. Candidates should have secured minimum of 55% aggregate upto 8th semester. Such candidates eventually joining the Fellowship should acquire aggregate marks of 55% in the five years integrated M.Sc. / B.S-M.S. (Single degree) qualifying degree, failing which candidate will not be allowed to continue in the programme. 

(vi) Candidates those who have completed but awaiting the final results of 4-year / 8-semester bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) may also apply. Candidates should have secured minimum of 75% aggregate upto 6th semester/3rd year. Such candidates eventually joining the Fellowship should acquire aggregate marks of 75% in the 4-year / 8-semester bachelor’s degree (B.S with fourth year Research) qualifying degree, failing which candidate will not be allowed to continue in the programme. All the relevant certificates should be submitted at the time of joining the Centre. Wherever the results are declared as CGPA/GPA, it may be converted to percentage and entered. (The formula prescribed by the institute for conversion is to be indicated at the time of verification). 

(C) M.Sc. /Integrated M.Sc. / B.S. (4 years) is the eligible qualification with the following subjects:-

1 Physics@ Mathematics must be one of the subjects at B.Sc. level 

2 Chemistry# (General/ Applied/ Organic/ Inorganic/ Physical/ Analytical) Physics as ancillary subject at B.Sc. Level; and Mathematics at H.Sc. level (Candidates who have not scored passing marks in Physics at B.Sc level and/or in Mathematics at H.Sc. level are NOT eligible to apply) 

3 Life sciences* (Life Science/Botany/ Zoology/ Agriculture/ Biochemistry/ Microbiology/ Molecular Biology/ Biotechnology/ Marine Biology/ Bioinformatics/ Genetics/ Plant Science/ Plant Breeding/ Plant Pathology/ Entomology/ Animal Science/ Biomedical Sciences/ Biosciences/ Food Science/ Food Science and Technology) Physics or Chemistry or Biochemistry or Agriculture Chemistry or any other allied Chemistry must be one of the subjects at B.Sc. / five-year integrated M.Sc. level 

@Candidates with M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / BS(4 years) with specializations in Electronics, and Instrumentation are NOT eligible to apply. 

#Candidates with M.Sc. / Integrated M.Sc. / BS(4 years) in Industrial Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Petroleum Chemistry, Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and M. Pharm. in Pharmaceutical Analysis are NOT eligible 

*Candidates with M.Sc. /Integrated M.Sc. / BS(4 years) in Fisheries, Horticulture, Forestry, Agronomy, Animal Husbandry, Bio-analytical Sciences, Polymer Science, Medicine/Medical Science, Pharmaceutical Science and Home Science are NOT eligible to apply. Candidates with B.Tech./M.Tech. degree in any of the Life Sciences disciplines are NOT eligible. 

4. SELECTION PROCEDURE 

Applications will be scrutinized, and candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on their score obtained in the national qualifying exams and/or academic performance. Following this process, the number of candidates to be called for interview will be decided by the Selection Committee. Final selection will be based on the performance of the candidate in the interview. The recommendation/decision of the Selection Committee will be final and binding.
