ILS Bhubaneswar Molecular Biology/Microbiology/Bioinformatics Project Openings

Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar, an autonomous institute of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India invites applications from eligible Indian Nationals for the following project positions. 

Principal Investigator: Dr. P. Prasad, Scientist-F 

Project Title: “Expansion of INSACOG Wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2, Emerging Pathogens and Antimicrobial Resistance through Genomic-based methods” (BIRAC grant: Ref No: GCI-13012 t2t202S-GCt). 

Project duration: 18 months Open Positions as per DST guidelines (OM-SR/S9/Z-05/2019, dated 10th July 2020): 

1. Project Scientist-II: Wet lab (01 position) 
Remuneration: Rs. 67,000/- per month + @20% HRA 
2. Project Associate-II: Wet lab (01 position) 
Remuneration: Rs. 35,000/- per month + @20% HRA 
3. Project Associate-II: Bioinformatics (01 position) 
Remuneration: Rs. 35,000/- per month + @20% HRA 
4. Laboratory technician: (02 positions) 
Remuneration: Rs. 20,000/- per month + @20% HRA 

Eligibility Criteria and Job Specification: 

Project Scientist-II – Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in the sciences or a master's degree in engineering or technology from a recognized university or an equivalent institution with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks (relaxation will be given as per the GOI guideline). Three years of experience in research and development in industrial and academic institutions, and in sciences and technology organizations, and in scientific activities and services. The candidate should be under 40 years of age as of November 27, 2025. Age relaxation will be granted to candidates as per the rules of the Government of India. 

Desired Qualification: The candidate should have experience with various microbiological and molecular biology techniques, including microbial isolation, cloning, PCR/qPCR/dPCR, electrophoresis, nucleic acid isolation, and library preparation for next-generation sequencing. The candidate should have managerial skills, including project management, report writing, and coordination with other institutions. 

Job Description: The candidate will perform and coordinate all sample collection, maintain a systematic data repository, conduct experiments, prepare reports, and collaborate with other institutions. 

Project associate-II (Wet lab) – Master's degree in natural or agricultural sciences / MVSc or bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology or medicine from a recognized university or equivalent with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (relaxation will be given as per the GOI guideline), along with 2 years of experience in research and development in industrial or academic institutions or sciences and technology organizations, and scientific activities and services. The candidate should be under 35 years of age as of November 27, 2025. 

Age relaxation will be granted to candidates as per the rules of the Government of India. 

Desired Qualification: The candidate should have experience with various microbiological and molecular biology techniques, including microbial isolation, cloning, PCR/qPCR/dPCR, electrophoresis, nucleic acid isolation, and library preparations for next-generation sequencing. 

Preference will be given to candidates who are qualified for national-level entrance tests (NET/GATE/GPAT). Job Description: To carry out sewage sample processing, nucleic acid extraction, RT-qPCRs, library preparation, and perform next-generation sequencing. 

Project associate-II (Bioinformatics) – Master's degree in natural or agricultural sciences / MVSc or bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology or medicine from a recognized university or equivalent with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (relaxation will be given as per the GOI guideline), along with 2 years of experience in research and development in industrial or academic institutions or sciences and technology organizations, and scientific activities and services. The candidate should be under 35 years of age as of November 27, 2025. Age relaxation will be granted to candidates as per the rules of the Government of India. 

Desired Qualifications: Candidates familiar with NGS data analysis, such as Exome, Whole-genome, RNA-seq, and ATAC-seq, and with experience in programming using R-Bioconductor and Python, will be preferred. A brief write-up (one page maximum) explaining bioinformatics research experience and publications (if any) should be submitted along with the application. Preference will be given to candidates who are qualified for national-level entrance tests (NET/GATE/GPAT). 

Job Description: The person will be responsible for analyzing next-generation sequencing data and related tasks. 

Laboratory technicians – B.Sc./ 3-year diploma in engineering and technology. The candidate must be under 50 years of age as of November 27, 2025. 

Desired Qualification: The candidate with biological technical skills and proficiency in Microsoft tools will be preferred. 

Job Description: Lab technicians will collect wastewater, soil, and other samples from various collection sites in and around Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. These samples will be collected routinely throughout the project. They will manage lab orders (Preparing indents, follow up with the vendors, obtaining quotes), general laboratory work, etc. 

Selection: Candidates will be shortlisted based on a comprehensive application screening process, as outlined in positionspecific guidelines. The shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview before a screening committee.
