About the Workshop:

Next generation sequencing has become an essential commodity in recent years for the genetic and genomic data generation and analysis. By the commercialization and availability of several high-throughput sequencing (HTS) or Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms, huge amounts of data are generated. These techniques are capable of sequencing millions of short sequences (reads) as well as the full genome in a single week or so at cost of 200-fold less than previous methods. Hence, the NGS has become a day-to-day part within the reach of traditional wet-lab biologists now days.

With the increase of large scale sequence level data, the genome-wide computational analysis is increasing and used as a backbone to foster novel discovery in biomedical researches. Various tools/algorithms have been developed for analyzing NGS data. These tools can fit into many general categories including alignment of sequence reads to a reference, base-calling and/or polymorphism selection, de novo assembly from paired or unpaired reads, structural variant detection and genome browsing.

Organizing this national workshop on “Introduction to Next Generation Sequencing” is an attempt to introduce the participants about the basic methods and principles used in NGS technology as well as the essential informatics skills and knowledge required to begin analyzing NGS data. This workshop includes hands on / demonstrations on training of some most common types of analysis by the experts in this field. All the lectures and practical sessions will be conducted by invited speakers, who will also highlight their ground-breaking works in applications of next generation sequencing.

Eligibility:

Faculty members from Universities and affiliated colleges, Scientists and Scholars from R & D Institutes, Professionals from Industries and Biotech companies, Post-Graduates and Under-Graduate Students working in the field of Bioinformatics/Computational Biology with knowledge in biology are welcome to register for the workshop.

As the numbers of participants are limited strictly to 20, selection will be done on a first come, first served basis.

Invited speakers (tentative)

Dr. Arindam Maitra (National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, Kalyani)
Dr. Nidhan K. Biswas (National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, Kalyani)
Dr. Priyanka Pandey (National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, Kalyani)
Dr. Analabha Basu (National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, Kalyani)

How to apply

The duly filled Registration Form along with the requisite fee in the form of demand draft WITH SIX MONTH VALIDITY, in favor of “UNIVERSITY OF KALYANI”, payable at KALYANI, should reach the coordinator, BIF Facility at the Address for Communication by 4th November, 2016. Interested participants may confirm their seat by sending scanned copy of their application form along with demand draft through email and submit the original by hand with prior permission.
