The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) - Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is a premier research centre carrying out frontier research in the biological sciences located in Bangalore.
Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate under the supervision of Dr. Radhika Venkatesan at NCBS, Bangalore.
Position summary: This position would require the candidate to work on understanding defence mechanisms in ferns with the aim to gain insights into the evolutionary origins of plant defences. The candidate would be responsible for sample collection (soil, plant, insect), analysis and performing greenhouse experiments. Since this position requires significant fieldwork, passion to work outdoors is essential. The candidate should maintain meticulous research records and must be skilled in basic chemical analysis. The candidate must actively participate in research group meetings and present weekly progress.
Essential qualification
1) Masters in Botany/Chemistry/Biochemistry/Environmental Sciences or related subjects.
Experience
1) Experience in conducting field studies in India. 
2) Experience in laboratory analysis, data management and statistical analysis. 
3) Ability to work independently.
Desirable: 
1) Ability to converse in local Indian languages. 
2) Basic plant taxonomy. 
3) Good organizational skills, ability to work in a team and develop new analysis protocols. 
4) Experience with Microsoft Office products with proficiency in Excel and knowledge of chromatography-related instrument software is preferable. 
5) Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
6) Hands-on knowledge of the GCMS and/or LCMS instrument or a strong background in mass spectrometry is highly desirable. 
7) 1 or more years of work experience in chromatography or any analytical chemistry lab with emphasis on experimental techniques and data interpretation as related to mass spectrometry is desirable.
Eligible candidates will be shortlisted and interviewed before selection. An emolument at Rs. 25,000 + 30% is allocated. Since this position is funded by Indo-German collaborative project, travel to Germany to learn new techniques and skills is expected. Selected candidate should be willing to travel to Germany.
