Short Course on Techniques in Structural and Functional Genomics CIMAP | Winter School (CWS)- 2008

Recent Techniques in Structural and Functional Genomics
CIMAP Winter School (CWS)- 2008

December 1 -10, 2008

In recent years, the field of biotechnology has appeared as the expression of wonderful applications of various techniques of molecular biology. Today there is hardly any application area involving biological systems, which doesn't depend on these techniques and concepts. It is logical to anticipate that future decade in this millennium will witness the major scientific advancements through the application of these molecular tools and skills. Towards maintaining the pace with the new developments and achieving a cutting edge in biotechnological applications globally, it is in fact necessary to inculcate these skills and expertise through systematic training of human resource by exposing young scholars, researchers and teachers to modern tools and sophisticated techniques of molecular biology. And that is what exactly the school (CWS-2008) aims at. This is the ninth specialised school on molecular biology by CIMAP after CWS-2000 last, which evoked tremendous response for participation and continuous demand of this course again this year from interested organisations.

About CIMAP :
Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) is a unique and highly important CSIR laboratory involved in plant research for the production of and value addition to the medicinal and aromatic materials for meeting the demands of Indian industry and for foreign exchange earning by exports. The institute has modern state of art laboratories for DNA fingerprinting, transgenic development and gene and biomolecule prospection. Lucknow, the ‘City of Nawabs’ is today more of a ‘Science City’ of North India for its possession of academic and scientific resourcefulness by the visible presence of organizations like CDRI, NBRI, ITRC, IISR, CISH, NBFGR, IET, KGMU, SGPGI and many others including Lucknow University. Lucknow has chili weather during December with temperature of 6-20 degrees centigrade requiring warm clothing and bedding.

Course Content :
The school beginning with basics of molecular biology tools would provide exposition to the following main methodologies:

  • DNA/RNA isolation and handling.
  • In vitro Transcription and RT-PCR
  • cDNA Library and EST analysis
  • DNA Cloning strategies
  • Southern/Northern blotting and hybridization
  • Automated DNA synthesis and sequencing
  • RAPD/AFLP analysis techniques
  • Bioinformatics tools for functional genomics
  • Exposure to Real-time expression, microarray, MALDI-TOF-TOF

Who should participate?
The “Winter school (CWS-2008)” has been specifically planned to provide the “hands on” exposure to the young scholars, researchers and teachers, who for the lack of infrastructure/sophisticated instrumentation are yet to gain the feel of practical aspects of modern biology. The participation in the school is limited to a manageable number of 16 trainees so as to facilitate direct hands on exposition to all participants and thus would be selection based attempting maximum geographic coverage.

How to apply?

The application along with the bio-data of applicant should be forwarded by the head of the institution giving in brief the benefits expected by the participant and the organization as a consequence of the training. The selection criteria will include the need of training and possibility of future work by the candidates in their respective areas of R &D through collaboration with their nearby equipped organizations and also maximum geographic representation. The maximum age limit for the school participation is 40 years. The course fee is Rs. 12500/- (Twelve thousand and five hundred only) covering the registration, study material for the school practical. Additionally, Rs2500/- (two thousand and five hundred only) will be payable to meet expenses on all local hospitality (including accommodation and food). The last date for receiving of applications at CIMAP is 25 October 2008. The provisional selection will be intimated to the candidates through fastest possible mode of communication at their location which will be confirmed only upon receiving the total fee and boarding / lodging charges of Rs15000/- through DD drawn in favour of Director, CIMAP, Lucknow on or before 10 November, 2008. The organizers will make arrangement for receiving, lodging and boarding of participants.

Course Structure:

Faculty comprising of the leading scientists and experts in the respective fields will give the lectures and practical demonstrations at the school. The school will be of 10 days duration and beneficial to the researchers, teachers and students of the university colleges and departments interested in various aspects of gene isolation, cloning, characterization, sequencing and DNA fingerprinting. The participation is through selection of the applicants by the organizers through an advisory committee and the committees' decision will be final and binding. The scholars/students desirous of attending may apply through proper channel on the application form overleaf along with the complete biodata and a statement on how the training will be useful to the candidate. About 16 applicants from different institutions will be selected for participation in the school. No TA/DA will be admissible to the participants for attending the school. The participants should be willing to work for long hours and hostel stay will be compulsory for the participants. The participants are expected to fully involve themselves in the training without leave and sign the undertaking in this respect. As part of the school curriculum the participants have to make presentation of 15 to 20 minutes on their respective projects. They must come prepared for the same. Sponsors may kindly ensure the same so that maximum benefit is imparted to the seriously interested candidates.
