UWA India Scholarships
The University of Western Australia will offer up to 50 fee waiver scholarships to Indian higher degree by research students for commencement in 2009.
Indian applicants who have a guarantee of support for a living allowance from an Indian government department, Indian University, employer or other recognised organisation in India may apply for a fee waiver scholarship to undertake a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at The University of Western Australia. The fee waiver scholarship will cover all tuition fees, as well as Overseas Student Health Cover.
Eligibility Criteria
In order to apply for an India Scholarship for International Research Fees (Indian SIRF), applicants must:
• be citizens of India;
• have a guarantee of living allowance support for the duration of the scholarship period from a recognised Indian organisation such as a government department, university or employer;
• demonstrate English language proficiency to an acceptable standard (see http://www.studyat.uwa.edu.au/postgrad/doctorates/admission/english for more information)
• have completed a relevant undergraduate degree requiring at least four years of study with First Class Honours, or the equivalent
• be prepared to enrol as a full-time candidate for a higher degree by research
Tenure of Scholarships
The duration of the scholarships is up to two years for Masters courses and up to four years for PhD courses. In order to be offered a SIRF, applicants must have guaranteed funding for the duration of their candidature.
Living Allowance support
Applicants for India SIRFs must also have a guarantee of living allowance support for the duration of their candidature. Living allowances are payments made to students while they are studying to cover living expenses. Scholarship students are only permitted to work limited hours and must enrol full-time so it is extremely important that students have a source of funds on which to live while they carry out their studies.
Living allowances must be provided by an organisation or agency in India. This may be a government department, university, employer or other organisation approved by UWA. If the value of the living allowance guaranteed is slightly below the minimum value of living allowances at UWA, the Scholarships Office MAY allow the relevant UWA School or Faculty to provide additional funds to bring the allowance up to the minimum level. In 2009, the minimum living allowance will be approximately $25 000 per annum.
Application Process and Time Scale
Applications open on 18 August 2008, and close on 17 October 2008. These scholarships will be for study commencing in 2009.
If you meet all admission requirements and are selected to receive a tuition fee scholarship from The University of Western Australia (UWA), then you will receive an offer letter.
Successful applicants will normally be expected to start their PhD study program at UWA within 12 months of the scholarship being awarded.
Application Instructions
Applications for Indian SIRFs are by online form.
Applicants who have previously applied for a Scholarship through iAthena (such as a China Scholarship or an IPRS/SIRF) and wish to transfer their application to the latest round should e-mail joanne.francis@uwa.edu.au to request the transfer.
