Bioinformatics is the latest & hottest buzzword in the field of Science & Technology in which Biology, Computer Science and Information Technology merge into a single discipline. The ultimate goal of Bioinformatics is to enable the discovery of new biological insights as well as to create a global prospective from which unifying principles in biology can be discerned. The term bioinformatics was coined by Paulien Hogeweg in 1979 for the study of informatic processes in biotic systems. Bioinformatics now entails the creation and advancement of databases, algorithms, computational and statistical techniques, and theory to solve formal and practical problems arising from the management and analysis of biological data. Over the past few decades rapid developments in genomic and other molecular research technologies and developments in information technologies have combined to produce a tremendous amount of information related to molecular biology. Because of automated gene sequencing machines and new worldwide activity in the field, both experimental (wet lab) and computer-generated data are increasing at an exponential rate. The increase in the holdings of GenBank, Swiss-Prot, and PubMed mirrors the growth of the hundreds of public and private online databases that reflect the work of thousands of researchers in laboratories around the world who are engaged in mass-producing biological data. Data mining techniques are an automated means of reducing the complexity of data in large bioinformatics databases and of discovering meaningful and useful patterns and relationships in data. Data mining is one stage in an overall knowledge discovery process. This process involves selection and sampling of the appropriate data from the database(s); preprocessing and cleaning of the data to remove redundancies, errors, and conflicts; transforming and reducing data to a format more suitable form; evaluation of the mined data; and visualization of the evaluation results.

OBJECTIVES:

The aim of this meeting is to expose the trainees to basic concepts of Bioinformatics & its application in Agricultural research, Biological databases, basics in Linux, Database management System and the data mining techniques as an automated means of reducing the complexity of data in large bioinformatics databases and of discovering meaningful, useful patterns and relationships in data. Course also includes an overview of the methods, technologies, and challenges associated with data mining.

TOPICS:

The Prime objective of this Training cum workshop is to understand the basics of Bioinformatics and its role in agricultural research. The training also provides an insight into Biological databases and current methods & strategies that are being used to mining of biological data. Following are the broad topics to be discussed at the Training programme:
* Introduction to Bioinformatics & Its Application in Agriculture
* Biological databases & its various applications in different fields
* Introduction to Linux
* Database Management System
* Data mining tools in Bioinformatics
* Hands on training by experts from AAU, Jorhat.
DURATION, METHODOLOGY AND VENUE:
Three days, lectures followed by hands on session by experts at Agri Bioinformatics Centre, AAU, Jorhat, Assam.
REGISTRATION FEE:
Registration fee for the training is Rs. 1000/- (Rs. 500/- for students & research scholars) payable to Director of Research (Agri), AAU, Jorhat through DD against the receipt along with the enclosed registration from. Registration fee is inclusive of training kit, working lunch & dinner on all the training days. Nomination of the candidates along with fee should reach on or before 20th February 2010 before 5 PM.
