Bioinformatics is a new emerging field that helps in collecting, linking, and manipulating different types of biological information to discover new biological insights. In short, bioinformatics is an information management system for molecular biology, biotechnology, medicine and agriculture. The most pressing tasks in bioinformatics involves the finding of genes in the DNA sequences of various organisms, developing methods to predict the structure and/or function of newly discovered proteins and structural RNA sequences, clustering protein sequences into families of related sequences ,development of protein models, aligning similar proteins and generating phylogenetic trees to examine evolutionary relationships.
The sequencing of the genomes of microbes, plants and animals should have enormous benefits for the agricultural community. Computational analysis of these sequence, data generated by genome sequencing, proteomics and array- based technologies is critically important. Bioinformatics tools can be used to search for the genes within these genomes and to elucidate their functions. This specific genetic knowledge could then be used to produce stronger, more drought resistant, disease resistant, insect resistant and more productive crops.
Keeping in view the changed scientific scenario in the post-genomic era and to expose the researchers to the latest computational biology tools for biological research, a training cum workshop on “Sequence Analysis & Its use in Biological Research” is being organized at the Agri- Bioinformatics Promotion Programme, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, Assam Agricultural University from 11th -13th March, 2010. The training includes theory and hands-on sessions on different aspects.
OBJECTIVES:
The aim of this training cum workshop is to expose the trainees to basics of sequence analysis using bioinformatics tools and its application in agricultural research. This program comprises of basic and advanced study domains of Bioinformatics, which are expected to equip the researchers with a complete practical and applied knowledge.
TOPICS:
The prime objective of this training cum workshop is to understand how sequence analysis is used in agricultural research using computational approach. Furthermore the training also provides an insight into current methods and strategies that are being used in biological sequence analysis.
Main topics to be covered are as under:* Sequence similarity, homology and alignment
* Sequence alignment & Database searching tools
* Motif finding in DNA and protein sequence
* Phylogeny Reconstruction
* Primer designing for gene amplification using Bioinformatics Tools
* Molecular Markers in crop improvement
* Plant Marker Identification using Bioinformatics Approach
* Gene Prediction tools
* Identification of repeats in plant genomes
* Hands on training by experts
LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS:
Students undergoing degree or fresh Graduates/ Faculty/ researchers in Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Computational Biology, Computer science or any Branches of life science/ agriculture/ horticulture etc.
DURATION AND METHODOLOGY:
Three days, lectures followed by hands on session by experts at Agri Bioinformatics Centre, AAU, Jorhat, Assam.
VENUE:
Agri-Bioinformatics Promtion Centre, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat-785013, Assam.
