The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage six research personnel (04-Research Biologists and 02-Sociologists) through a walk-in-interview on Friday, 18th February 2011. The details of the available position along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below: 

Project Title, details of position and duration Reintroduction of Cheetah in India. (04-Research Biologists and 02-Sociologists) Duration: Five months (Extendable based on performance and need)
Essential Qualification Research Biologist: Masters Degree in Wildlife Science/Ecology/Environment Science/Life Sciences/ Forestry/Zoology/Botany/ Veterinary Science from a recognised University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.
Sociologist: Masters Degree in Sociology/Economics/Anthropology/Psychology from a recognised University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.
Desirable Qualification Research Biologist: Candidates with documented research experience of working in the field of Wildlife Science or Ecology will be given preference. Documented computer, analytical, and writing skills in the form of publications would be given preference. Candidates should demonstrate ability to conduct extensive field work.
Sociologist: Minimum of one year experience in conducting social surveys in and around Protected Areas of India. Knowledge of issues related to people – wildlife conflicts and mitigation based on published work/reports. Candidates with experience of working with local communities and involved in village relocation programme will be given preference. Candidates should demonstrate ability to conduct extensive field work.
Project Description The Government of India has decided to reintroduce the Cheetah in India. For this the Wildlife Institute of India in collaboration with the Wildlife trust of India conducted an assessment of ten potential sites of which three were found suitable. The current project aims at developing site specific action plans for each of these selected sites for reintroducing the cheetah. The three sites are Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary and Naurahadehi Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh and Shahgarh Landscape in Jaisalmer District of Rajasthan.
Tasks Description The researchers are required to work closely with the respective forest department officials in obtaining detailed base line data on prey, other large carnivores, habitat, local communities, livestock populations, and law enforcement issues. A road map for reintroducing the cheetah would be developed within 5-6 months for each of these sites which provides details of actions needed on the ground regarding prey base restoration, habitat management and restoration; socio-economies of local communities and resettlement requirements; and potential for conflict (livestock predation as well as potential of poaching) with local communities.

GENERAL Terms & Conditions
  1. The age of the candidate shall not be more than 35 years as on 15th February 2011. The selection of the candidates will be based on `Walk-in-Interview’ scheduled to be conducted at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun on Friday, 18th February 2011.
  2. Candidates who arrive for the Walk-in-Interview would register at 09:00 A.M. on Friday, 18th February 2011. Candidates should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of qualifications, experience, date of birth etc. along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations. All original documents should be produced at the time of registration.
  3. The selection offer to the candidates will be on purely contractual basis for a period of five months initially and it may be extended for further period(s) depending upon the requirement of the project and satisfactory performance of the candidates. Selected candidate(s) will be paid a consolidated amount of Rs. 12,000/- as stipend per month. In addition, Rs. 2000/- per month will be paid to the selected candidates during the field work to meet their boarding expenses.
  4. Canvassing in any form is liable to result in rejection of the candidature.
  5. The selected candidates need to join immediately or at a short notice.
  6. The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.

  8. The Director, WII reserves the right to reject any candidature in view of incomplete information provided by the candidate or for any other reason.
