Department Overview

The new Department of Environment and Primary Industries will focus on boosting productivity in Victoria’s worldclass food and fibre sector, protection of our environment and the management of our natural resources, strongly influenced by decision‐making at a local level.

The department will work towards a more efficient management of public and private land, waterways and partnerships with community, Landcare groups and stakeholders.

The Department of Environment and Primary Industries will:

 provide a one stop shop for effective and efficient land, water and agricultural services for the people of Victoria

 boost service delivery to regional areas

 provide greater capacity to respond to emergencies, such as fire, floods or biosecurity incursions.

Position Description

The position will undertake research focusing on plant phenomics underpinning the physiological and molecular processes for the enhancement of growth and productivity of crop plants to boost the Victorian agricultural industry. The position requires assisting and developing plant phenomics experiments for controlled environment and field based research and undertake quality systems and regulatory tasks to be applied across relevant research programs within the Biosciences Research Division of the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI). The Division is implementing state‐of‐the‐art high‐throughput plant phenotyping systems for rapid analysis of glasshouse and field grown plants.

You will be responsible for coordinating the scientific and technical aspects of the research projects including the design and conduct of experiments, literature review and overseeing phenotypic observations and data analysis for controlled environmental, laboratory and field based experiments. The position has responsibilities to communicate the findings of research projects, analyse results, writing reports and publications in peer reviewed journals. You will also ensure efficient quality management practices are in place and compliance with key national and state regulatory organisations.

The successful applicant will be part of a world‐class multidisciplinary research team in Biosciences Research Division. The incumbent will work collaboratively with scientists and staff across research platforms from molecular plant breeding, plant functional genomics, molecular genetics, discovery technologies and computational biology.

An appropriate degree in Science, Agricultural Science or an equivalent science qualification is Mandatory.
