This project, which has been funded by DBT, will focus on understanding the distribution patterns of stream dwelling anuran, Nyctibatrachus kempholeyensis in the Agriculture-forest matrix with special reference to Myristica Swamps in two-river basins-Sharavathi and Aghanashini of central Western Ghats and map their distribution. The project also aims to study the genetic diversity and population genetic structure of the selected species in the Agriculture-forest matrix. Specifically, the study aims to understand the whether fragmentation and degradation of forests affects the population viability of N. kempholeyensis and assess the influence of landscape structure on the genetic variablility.

Essential qualifications

M.Tech (Biotechnology)/M.Tech (Environmental Engineering) or M.Sc (Biotechnology) with NET qualification from a reputed university. Three years of research experience backed up with research publications. Candidate should be motivated to work on amphibians and should be prepared to carry out the fieldwork in the Western Ghats at odd hours independently. He/she should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be willing to work in a team. He/She will undertake both the field as well as lab work including research design, sampling in the Western Ghats, developing microsatellite markers, population genetic analysis, data analysis and writing reports and manuscript. Preference will be given to candidates who have already worked on amphibians and has some knowledge on species distribution modeling.
