BARC Recruitment of Science Postgraduates as SCIENTIFIC OFFICERS 2019-20 in Life Sciences

Recruitment of Science Postgraduates as SCIENTIFIC OFFICERS
for the Academic year 2019-20

Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Post Graduates  [OCES] is the flagship program of the BARC Training Schools for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

The Training Program aims to ensure that the Trainee Scientific Officers (TSOs) are provided with the necessary facilities and opportunities to acquire knowledge and develop skills in R&D pertaining to Nuclear Science & Technology. The course comprises of  foundation, core, advanced and elective courses, mini-projects etc. in several disciplines.

The course work consisting of classroom lectures, practical training and project work, is organized into three trimesters and is completed in one year commencing on 1st August every year. Evaluation on a continuous basis is carried out by way of examinations and assignments.

The OCES program is recognized for the award of Post-Graduate Diploma and as course work for the award of M.Tech./M.Phil./Ph.D. degree of the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), an aided institution of the Department of Atomic Energy and a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act.

More than 9000 officers have graduated from the BARC Training Schools since their inception.

Selection process

Selection to OCES/DGFS is a two-step process:
screening to short-list potential candidates followed by interview of the short-listed candidates.

Except for Radiological Safety Engineering (RSE), each listed discipline follows an independent selection process. RSE is available only as an additional option to applicants for Physics and Chemistry disciplines.
Screening for the Engineering disciplines is based on two alternative methods :

(a) GATE Score: For Cut-off GATE Score visit Homi Bhabha National Institute Website
(b) Written TestA written test is conducted in each of the seven Engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer and Instrumentation Engineering) except Civil Engineering for short-listing candidates for interview. Candidates who do not opt for GATE or who do not qualify on the basis of GATE Score may take the Written Test. Travel Allowance is not paid for appearing in it. The written test is held in around the month of April or May every year.

Screening for the Science disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences, Geology and Geophysics)
is based on two alternative methods:

(a) Written Test: It is conducted in each of the five Science disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences, Geology and Geophysics) for short-listing candidates for interview. Travel Allowance is not paid for appearing in the written test. The written test is held in around the month of, February every year.
(b) GATE Score: In this case, merit list in each of the Science disciplines is prepared on the basis of valid GATE Score of the applicants. Cut-off GATE score and Written test marks for short-listing candidates for interview in each discipline are decided after the last date of receipt of applications.

A candidate applying for Science disciplines can opt to (i) appear for the written test, or (ii) apply on the basis of valid GATE Score, or (iii) appear for written test and also apply for selection on the basis of valid GATE Score .
Selection Interviews of short-listed candidates are conducted in any of the BARC Training Schools. Outstation applicants are paid to & fro train fare by sleeper class.  Selection interviews are held during May to July every year.
Final Selection is solely on the basis of performance in interview subject to medical fitness.

This selection process is also used for selecting candidates for research based academic programmes of HBNI and for Diploma in Radiological Physics programme of HBNI. Eligibility criteria and associated details will be made available in the advertisements of respective programmes which are released separately.
