The WII wishes to engage eight (08) research fellows [01-Senior Research Associate, 01-Research Associate, 05-Junior Research Fellows and 01-Technical Assistant] through a Walk-in-Interview on Friday, 19th November 2010. The details of the available position along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below.

JRF - 2 Posts
Project # 1 Ecology of leopard (Panthera pardus) in relation to prey abundance and land-use pattern in Kashmir Valley.

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification Masters Degree in Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/Zoology/Environmental Science/ Forestry/Forest Management/Life Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification Experience in herbivore and carnivore population estimation, radio tracking, GIS & Remote Sensing. Knowledge of area and local language.

Description of Work
 
The project aims to study ranging, movement pattern, habitat use, food habits, estimation of prey species, study human-animal conflict and suggest detailed management guidelines for conservation in and around Dachigam National Park, Srinagar, Kashmir.
JRF - 1 Post
Project # 2 Diversity and conservation of endangered fish genetic resources of Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu.

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification  Masters Degree in Zoology/ Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/ Fishery Science/ Environmental Science/ Life Sciences with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification  Experience in taxonomy, ecology and biology of freshwater fishes, stream habitat assessment, fish genetics and captive breeding.

Description of Work  The project aims to study diversity, distribution and resource utilization patterns of stream fishes, Assessing genetic diversity within different population of selected endangered species and captive breeding and ranching of threatened species.
JRF - 2 Posts
Project # 3 Studies on housing and enclosure enrichment of some species in selected Indian zoos.

Duration: Two years.

Essential Qualification  Masters Degree in Zoology/Forestry/Environmental Science/Wildlife Science/Biological Science/Life Science, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification  Experience of working on captive animals.

Description of Work  Collection of baseline data on behavioural patterns in captivity, development of enrichment material and evaluation of effects of enrichment on target species.
TA - 1 Post
Project # 4 Ecology, behaviour and interaction of highly dense populations of sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) and human-sloth bear conflict in Jessore wildlife sanctuary, Gujarat and Mount Abu wildlife sanctuary, Rajasthan’

Duration: Till 25.04.2011.

Essential Qualification  Masters Degree in Zoology/Wildlife Science/Animal Science/Environment Science/Life Science with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification Experience on large carnivore/herbivore research, habitat evaluation, estimating prey abundance, food habit analysis and human-wildlife conflict.

Candidates having knowledge of Hindi and/or local language of Rajasthan/Gujarat to interact with local community, and knowledge of computer software will be preferred.

Description of Work  The project aims to study ecology of sloth bear, human-sloth bear conflict and management aspects in Jessore wildlife sanctuary and Mount Abu wildlife sanctuary. Information on land cover, landuse, vegetation composition and structure, den distribution, habitat, food habits and ranging pattern of sloth bears, impacts of biotic pressures, and socio-economic impacts of menace on rural community will be collected. Sloth bear proof power fencing will be developed.

Project # 5 Wildlife Forensic Cell

Duration: One year.

Essential Qualification  Ph.D degree in Zoology/ Wildlife Sciences/Environmental Sciences/ Forestry/Experimental Biology/Biological Sciences/Life Sciences.

Desirable Qualification
  1. Work experience in electrophoresis and molecular genetics using PCR based techniques, PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing/ developing species specific characteristics.
  2. Good knowledge in biostatistics and multivariate techniques for use in DNA and animal genetics.
  3. Any other academic qualification related to work.
Description of Work
  1. R.A. is required to work under supervision of Nodal Officer, Wildlife Forensic Cell for developing DNA based techniques and protocols for dealing wildlife offence cases.
  2. To prepare protocols for identifying species from biological materials seized under wildlife offences.
  3. Establish liaison with national and international forensic laboratories
  4. To provide scientific input and assistance in organizing workshop by WII and other organizations.
  5. To maintain proper record and files of all wildlife forensic cases.
  6. To prepare annual requirement of equipment, glass wares, chemicals, plastic wares and maintain proper stock entries of these, and
  7. To collect reference samples, and other work assigned by Nodal Officer.
SRA - 1 Post
Project # 6 Studies on housing and enclosure enrichment of some species in selected Indian zoos.

Duration: Two years.

Essential Qualification Ph.D degree in Zoology/Wildlife Sciences.

Desirable Qualification  Experience of working on captive animals.

Description of Work  Study design, interpretation of behavioural studies, development and evaluation enrichment material and developing of guidelines.
General
  1. Candidate for the position of Senior Research Associate (SRA) and Research Associate (RA) should be below 40 years of age as on 15th November 2010 and the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST in case of advertised position of Research Associate, only. For the position of JRF/TA, the age shall not be more than 28 years as on 15th November 2010. Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women/physically handicapped categories.
  2. Selected candidate for the position of Senior Research Associateship (SRA) will be paid emoluments equivalent to the lowest basic pay of Scientist-B (` 15,600/-) plus other allowances as per the approved rules & regulations for the award of Senior Research Associateship at WII. The selected candidate Research Associate (RA) will be paid consolidated emoluments of ` 22,000/- per month and selected candidate for the position of Junior Research Fellow will be paid a consolidated emoluments of ` 12,000/- per month. In case of NET qualified candidates (UGC/CSIR) for Research Fellows, the selected JRF will be paid consolidated emoluments of ` 16,000/- per month and in case of NET qualified (UGC/CSIR) candidates with Professional P.G. Degree, he/she will be paid consolidated emoluments of ` 18,000/- per month as fellowship. The fellowship amount for the selected Technical Assistant is ` 9,600/- consolidated per month and Rs. 12,700/- in case of NET qualified candidate(s) for Research Fellows (UGC/CSIR).
  3. Selected candidates may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
  4. Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project/cell.
  5. The selection of the candidates will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Friday, 19th November 2010 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registration of candidates will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards.
  6. A candidate shall be eligible to apply for only one advertised position.

Candidates should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations.   9. Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be liable to rejection.
  10. One way travel expenses will be paid to the selected candidate, upon joining the Institute and producing the proof of journey ‘tickets’. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route to Dehra Dun from his/her place of stay/residence.
  11. The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
