The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India has established an agri·food cluster comprising of National Agri·Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) and Bio·Processing Unit (BPU) along with an Agri·Food Biotechnology Park in the "Knowledge City", Sector 81, SAS Nagar, Mohali, Punjab·160071. The BPU will be a real time interface between the laboratory scale developing, optimisation and applications of bioprocesses, aimed at enhancing the value of agricultural and food products and by products. The BPU shall link the innovations and emerging technologies in the country and elsewhere, with pilot plant and scale up facilities, and serve as an incubator for start·up agri·food companies. It will function as a 'Not·for· Profit Company' and aim at becoming self·sufficient through 'Fee·for·Services' and private equity in due course.

BPU is looking for a Founder 'Scientist E' to spearhead the establishment of this institute meant to catalyse the growth of innovative bioprocessing industry in agri·food sector in India. The post offers a unique opportunity for providing leadership in the area of bioprocessing technologies and bio products development in the area of food, nutraceuticals, cosmaceuticals, industrial bioproducts, feed, biofuel and others. The candidate selected will be the Founder 'Scientist E' of BPU and main responsibilities will include (1) leading and nurturing core multi·disciplinary programmes for development of high value products through processes meeting international standards (2) developing lab to pilot scale facilities and custom processing solutions to give competitive advantage to SMEs and promoting technology and product driven translational knowledge in areas covering natural products, lipids and oils, starches & carbohydrates, proteins & peptides, enzymes and other bioactives.

Professional Qualifications: The candidate must have a Ph. D with 7 years experience or Ph. D (engg.) with 6 years experience or M. Tech with 8 years experience in Food Technology / Biochemical or Bioprocess Engineering or related field; knowledge of product and process development and related technologies and preferably, experience in relevant industry.

Salary & Allowances: The position is in PB·4 in the Scale of Pay . ~ 37400·67000 plus Grade Pay ~8700 with allowances, perks and IPR·related benefit sharing as per Government of India norms. Minimum total emoluments will be about ~ 78,000/· p.m. but could be up to ~ 90000/· with advance increments, depending upon merit and experience.

Age limit and tenure of appointment: The applicant should not exceed 45 years of age on the last date for the receipt of applications (viz. 30th April, 2011).

Selection Process: The applications and nominations will be received against the advertised position. Suitably constituted Screening Committee will screen the applications on the basis of recommendation letters, qualifications and experience. The applicants identified as sufficiently promising will be examined in further details by suitable Selection Committee. The short listed candidates will be invited for interactions at the institute and for discussions with suitably constituted Selection Committees. The successful applicant will be invited to join If candidate of sufficiently high merit is not available, the position will not be filled

General Conditions:

1. The date for determining the age limit / experience / qualification shall be on the last date for receiving applications at NABI.
2. In addition to the usual pay & allowances as admissible vide 6th Pay Commission in the above scales, other benefits such as Leave Travel Concession, Medical expenses, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance, Telephone Expenses etc are also available as per rules.

4. Candidates will be governed by New Pension Scheme of Central Government effective from 01·01·2004.
5. Appointment will be made initially on contract for a period of 5 years or the age of superannuation at 60 years, whichever being earlier with an initial probation period of one year which may be extended at the discretion of the Competent Authority. Further continuation, if any will depend on candidate's performance during the initial period offiveyears.

7. 8. Mere fulfilment of essential qualifications and experience does not entitle a candidate to be called for interview since the position is for a very demanding level of leaders hip.
9. At least five confidential letters of reference addressed by email directly to the Executive Director (refrees-facultvbpu@nabi.res.inl written by some of the most distinguished experts, known personally to the candidate should be arranged. These should comment upon I. Candidate's ability to build an institute of high leadership in the country II. Candidate's suitability for path breaking research & innovative thinking. III. Ability to function independently as well as in teams in the area of food and non-food processes, technologies and products. IV Ability to link the innovations and technologies with entrepreneurs. V Ability to develop partnerships nationally and globally.
10. Nominations by distinguished experts may be considered, depending upon merit and the area of expertise.
11.ln case of candidates employed in permanent posts, request for deputation and salary protection will be considered.
12. Incomplete applications will be summarily rejected.
13. Outstation candidates called for interview will be paid to and fro second class railway fare, as per Government rules on presentation of the proof.
