The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 17 Research Fellows [01 Senior Research Fellow (SRF): 07 Junior Research Fellows (JRFs); 03 Technical Assistants (TAs) and 06 Research Biologists] (Indian national only) through a walk-in-interview on Monday, 19th March 2012. The details of the available position along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below:
Status survey and conservation of Himalayan Crocodile Salamander (Tylototriton verrucosus) in the Eastern Himalayas.
(01 SRF and 01 JRF)
Duration: Two Years.
Essential Qualification
SRF: Masters degree in Wildlife Science/Wildlife Biology/Zoology/Life Sciences/ Environmental science with 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University and minimum of two years of research experience in the field.
Desirable Qualification
Interest in herpetology; exposure to wilderness areas in India.
Description of Work
Field surveys for the Himalayan salamander in remote areas in the north east; survey designing and execution; data analyses for occupancy surveys; niche-modeling and preparing reports/manuscripts for publication.
Essential Qualification
JRF: wildlife science, wildlife biology, zoology, life sciences, environmental science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Interest and professional skills in herpetology; knowledge of GIS applications; exposure to wilderness areas in the north east of India.
Description of Work
Field surveys for the Himalayan salamander in remote areas in the north east; execution of occupancy surveys; niche-modeling and preparing reports/manuscripts for publication.
Macroecology of terrestrial herpetofauna in Andaman & Nicobar archipelago.

Desirable Qualification
Candidate should have interest and experience on working with herpetofauna.
Description of Work
Documenting the patterns in body size, species co-occurrence and the relationship between abundance and distribution in herpetofauna in the islands.
Ecology and Conservation of Himalayan Wolf.

Duration: Three and half years (initially).
Essential Qualification
Masters Degree in Wildlife Biology/Life Science/Forestry/Environmental Science/ with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Field research experience in the Himalayan region; experience in the field of wildlife survey; Use of GIS and data analysis software.
Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of the Trans Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply.
Description of Work
The project aims to collect ecological data on Himalayan Wolf across the Indian Trans Himalayan region. This project involves extensive field work in the remote, rugged, high altitude regions of J&K, Himachal, Uttarakhand and Sikkim.
A study on ecology and migration pattern of Lesser Florican Sypheotides indica in the Western India using satellite tracking techniques.

Description of Work
To conduct status survey of the Lesser Florican and its habitat during the breeding season and also studying its behavior and movement patterns using modern satellite tracking techniques.
A Survey of the Avifauna in the Important Bird Areas (IBAs) of the Trans-Himalayan Region.

Prior experiences in (a) Ornithology, bird identification and bird surveys, (b) field survey methods, and (c) Application of Remote Sensing and GIS.
Description of Work
To survey the avian fauna in trans-Himalayan region especially in important bird areas. To identify potential and current problems in the conservation of the avifauna of the region especially with reference to the increasing anthropogenic pressures including grazing, biomass removals, plantations and increasing tourism and military activities.
Phylogenetic status of Sambar (Rusa unicolar) in Western Ghats.

Duration: One Year.
Essential Qualification
Masters degree in Biotechnology with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
One year research experience on genetic study of ungulates. Experience in handling of mitochondrial and microsatellite markers.
Description of Work
To conduct genetic study on collected biological samples of Sambar and other related deer species.
Study of genetic diversity in wild (Sus scrofa cristatus) and domestic (Sus scrofa domestica) pigs to find level of hybridization between them in the vicinity of Ranthambore National park.

Essential Qualification
Masters degree in M.Sc. in Animal Genetics/Molecular ecology/ Biotechnology/Zoology/ Wildlife Science or M.V.Sc. in Animal Genetics with minimum of 60% aggregate marks.
Desirable Qualification
Candidates with an aptitude for doing field work, data collection and analysis, working experience in electrophoresis and molecular genetics and DNA sequencing etc., and knowledge of computer applications will be preferred.
Description of Work
The project aims to study to study genetic diversity in wild and domestic pigs and to find the level of hybridization between wild and domestic pigs based on genetic variability in and around the Ranthambore National park, and to examine the possibility of hybridization between wild and domestic pigs in other parts of the country. The job requirements are to collect pig samples from field areas and to undertake DNA extraction, PCR amplification and DNA sequencing for genotyping work.
Management of monkey population using fertility control techniques in and around WII Campus - A Pilot project.

Essential Qualification
Masters degree in Zoology/Wildlife Science/Animal Science/Environment Science/Life Science with minimum of 60% aggregate marks.
Desirable Qualification
Candidates with an aptitude for doing field work, data collection and analysis, specialization in reproductive physiology and endocrinology and knowledge of computer applications will be preferred.
Description of Work
The project aims to develop capture techniques for selectively capturing male and female Rhesus monkeys and translocation procedure, surgical procedure for carrying out vasectomy in male monkeys, and to treat female monkeys with vaccines (Recombinant Protein) or other antifertility agents to control their fertility, and to study the intraspecific behaviour, breeding activity and population dynamics of treated monkeys in and around the campus.
Monitoring System for tigers – Intensive Patrolling and Ecological Status (MSTrIPES Program).
(06 Research Biologists)
Duration: 3 years
Essential Qualification
Masters Degree in Wildlife Science/ Ecology/ Environment Science, Life Sciences, Forestry, Zoology, Botany, Veterinary Science, Geo Informatics degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.
Desirable Qualification
Candidates with documented research experience of working in the field of wildlife science or ecology will be preferred. Candidate should also possess adequate knowledge of carnivore and ungulate population estimation techniques and data analysis.
Description of Work
Selected candidates are required to work closely with the respective forest department officials in obtaining detailed base line data on prey, other large carnivores, and habitat.
To learn the software to implement MSTrIPES program.
Evaluation of MHC Heterozygosity in isolated tiger population.
(02 TA)
Duration: Eighteen Months.
Essential Qualification
Masters degree in Animal Genetics/Molecular ecology/ Biotechnology/Zoology/ Wildlife Science or M.V.Sc. in Animal Genetics with minimum of 55% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Candidates with an aptitude for doing field work, data collection and analysis, work experience on genetic study of animal species, and knowledge of computer applications will be preferred.
Description of Work
The project aims is to conduct the genetic study in tigers. The work will include the sample collection from tiger reserves and laboratory analysis on collected biological samples.
GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS
The age of the candidate shall not be more than 28 years for the advertised position of JRF and TA and 32 years for SRF as on Wednesday, 17th March 2012 for the advertised position of SRF. Upper age limit for SRF/JRF/TA may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.
The age of the candidate shall not be more than 30 years as on Wednesday, 17th March 2012 for the advertised position of Research Biologist. The upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC and women categories.
Selected candidate for the position of Junior Research Fellow will be paid a consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month. In case of NET qualified candidates (UGC/CSIR) for Research Fellows, the selected JRF will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 16,000/- per month and in case of NET qualified (UGC/CSIR) candidates with Professional P.G. Degree, he/she will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 18,000/- per month as fellowship.
Selected candidate for the position of Research Biologist will be paid a consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month as fellowship.
The fellowship amount for the selected Senior Research Fellow is Rs. 14,000/- consolidated per month and Rs. 18,000/- in case of NET qualified candidate(s) for Research Fellows (UGC/CSIR).
The fellowship amount for the selected Technical Assistant is Rs. 9,600/- consolidated per month and Rs. 12,700/- in case of NET qualified candidate(s) for Research Fellows (UGC/CSIR).
Selected candidate may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
The selection of the candidate will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Monday, 19th March 2012 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registration will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards.

One way travel expenses will be paid to the candidate, selected for the project. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.
The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
