Research at IISER Pune covers a wide range of research areas in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. In addition, we actively encourage research initiatives that span multiple disciplines.
IISER Pune offers modern research laboratories and computational facilities as well as comfortable housing for students selected into a graduate program at the institute. A core component of graduate student life at IISER Pune includes opportunities to participate in a broad range of seminars, meetings and workshops. This gives our students opportunities to interact with people from other research organizations within the country and abroad.
IISER Pune runs PhD program in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.

Applications for the PhD program in Biology (August 2014 session) are invited from motivated candidates with a background in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics or Engineering.

2. PhD in Biology (Ecology and Evolution)
Step 1: Appear for written test – JGEEBILS Entrance Exam
Starting this year IISER Pune, Biology has adopted the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) as one of the criteria to induct students into the PhD program. JGEEBILS is administered by TIFR and will be conducted at multiple centers across India.
Applications for JGEEBILS must be submitted online to http://univ.tifr.res.in/gs2014/Apply_Online/Apply_Online.htm Please select the option “Applying for Biology”. This exam will be held on Sunday, December 8th, 2013.
Step 2: Apply to IISER-Pune PhD program in Biology (General). Application form will be made available in January 2014.
Eligible students need to apply to our PhD program in Biology (General) by filling out an application form that will be made available through this website in January 2014. In the IISER application form, please fill in your JGEEBILS roll number and score, without which the system will not accept your application.
Step 3: Appear for interview if shortlisted
Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on the score in JGEEBILS and the following Eligibility Criteria:
1. 60% marks or equivalent CGPA for General/OBC (55% or equivalent CGPA for SC/ST) in M.Sc in any branch of Science –Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics/Biological Sciences/Ecology & Environmental Sciences/Biodiversity or equivalent. B.E/B.Tech/M.Tech or MBBS degree holders may also apply.
2. Additionally, the candidate MUST have qualified any ONE of the following exams:
- National Eligibility Test (NET) with VALID CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF or DBT-JRF-A or ICMR-JRF or ICAR-JRF or BINC.
OR
- Must have passed CSIR-LS or DAE-JEST or NBHM or GATE or GPAT in last two years with a valid score.
o For CSIR-LS rank-holders up to rank 200 are eligible.
o For DAE-JEST/GATE/GPAT rank-holders up to rank 500 are eligible.
OR
- IISER BS-MS (All IISERs) Dual degree students with a CGPA which is greater than or equal to 7.0.
PhD in Biology (Ecology and Evolution)
Step 1: GATE (Ecology/Evolution) Exam
Starting this year IISER Pune, Biology has adopted the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering-Ecology (GATE-Ecology and Evolution) as one of the criteria to induct students into the PhD program in Ecology and Evolution. GATE is an all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The GATE applications for 2014 closes on October 1, 2013. More information can be found here (link to: http://gate.iitkgp.ac.in/).
Step 2: Apply to IISER-Pune PhD program in Biology (Ecology/Evolution). Applications will be made available in March 2014.

B.E/B.Tech/M.Tech or MBBS degree holders may also apply.

Attested copies of all supporting documents (mark sheets, certificates, age proof, caste certificate, etc.) are to be brought in at the time of the interview.
