Background:
Historically, small organic molecules isolated from plant and microbial biodiversity have contributed significantly to the development of modern drugs. Natural products chemistry driven drug discovery from medicinal-plants and microbes has a long tradition and successful track-record in producing ‘first-in-class’ drugs and leads. It is noteworthy that more than 60% of currently used anti-cancer drugs and 70% anti-microbial drugs are directly or indirectly derived from natural products. Many of these drugs have emerged from the knowledgebase of various traditional systems of medicine from India (Ayurveda, Unani, Sidha etc), China and South America. In India, Col. Sir Ram Nath Chopra, laid the foundation of pharmacology of Indian medicinal plants by pursuing the clinically documented benefits of Ayurvedic botanical drugs. Since the medicinal plants have been used for centuries as herbal botanical drugs in different indigenous systems of medicine world over, their potential of botanical drugs have been realized for their integration in the modern system of medicine and various regulatory bodies across the globe including USFDA have created regulatory pathway for their clinical trials and approvals. Increasing demand for botanical drugs has to be supported with authentication and standardization based on molecular and chemical markers, captive cultivation as well as ‘chemistry manufacturing & control (CMC)’, bio-efficacy, and preclinical safety/toxicity studies, adhering to GMP & regulatory parameters.
Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (Jammu, India), Medanta-Duke Research Institute (Gurgaon, India) and National Centre for Natural Product Research (University of Mississippi, USA) are planning to jointly organize a two day symposium on botanical drug development during 13-14 December, 2013, at MDRI, Gurgaon, India. Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM) is a national Institute of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) of India, with primary focus of research on drug discovery from natural products (medicinal plants and microbial species). IIIM is a multi-disciplinary organization encompassing the natural products chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, biotechnology and botanical sciences.
Medanta Duke Research Institute (MDRI) represents linkage of Medanta-Medicity, India and Duke University, USA, and the shared goals of advancing clinical investigative methodology in the interests of global health care. It functions to improve the understanding and assessment of drugs earlier in their development process by testing the compounds on a more diverse population. MDRI can accommodate innovative research protocols in any therapeutic area or research discipline, but the primary areas of focus are cardiovascular/metabolic disease, neuroscience, infectious disease, and oncology. National Center for Natural Products Research, University of Mississippi (USA), is a university-based academic research unit devoted to the discovery and development of new pharmaceutical and agrichemical technologies based on the amazing chemical diversity of living organisms - plants, animals, and microbes. Institute has strength in many diferent disciplines including pharmacognosy [natural products chemistry], microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, pharmacology/toxicology, medicinal chemistry, botany, plant physiology, plant pathology, pharmaceutics, and more. Its mission entails the provision of national and international leadership in all aspects of discovery, development, clinical evaluation, and marketing of pharmaceuticals.
Objectives of the Symposium:
The symposium will provide Indian herbal drug / botanical / nutraceutical / dietary supplement industry and other R & D institutes involved in research on drug discovery and development, to present their strengths / approaches to the visiting scientists from various research / academic institutes, Industry and government regulatory authorities of United States of America. At the same time, the lectures by US-FDA officials will provide opportunity to learn regarding regulatory requirements for IND filing and New Drug Approval (NDA). Entrepreneurs from USA will educate on the requirements of botanical drug, quality parameters and economic impact.
In general the symposium would provide information on botanical raw materials, authentication, quality control, isolation of markers and standardization, bioevaluation, safety & toxicology studies, regulatory aspects of bioactive NCEs and botanicals / nutraceuticals, Industry-institute partnership for improving quality compliance.
Mode of Registration:
The symposium is being organized in collaboration with the National Centre for Natural Products Research (NCNPR), University of Mississippi, USA and Medanta-Duke Research Institute (MDRI), Gurgaon, India. The participation will be primarily on the basis of nomination / sponsorship from US-FDA, NIH and Indian R&D and manufacturing companies and regulatory authorities. Selected experts from India and abroad will be invited to deliver lectures in the areas listed above.
Students and young researchers may participate in the symposium by filling the Registration Form and paying a nominal registration fee, as mentioned below.
International delegates : US$ 200....
Industry participants : Rs. 7,000/-
Academicians / Scientists : Rs. 3,000/-
Students : Rs. 2,000/-
Total number of participants for poster presentation during the symposium will be restricted to 50 only.
Registration for poster presentation will be on first come first serve basis and would be conformed after peer review.
The registration fee (DD) of the applicants who are not selected would be returned within 15 days after the closure of registration process.
Last date of registration : November 20th, 2013.
