WALK-IN-INTERVIEW

to engage Research Fellows

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 06 research personnel viz., 01–Junior Research Fellow, 01–Research Biologist, 01–Research Associate and 03–Project Biologists (Indian national only) through a walk-in-interview on Monday, 9th February 2015. The details of the available positions along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below:

An assessment of breeding, foraging and habitat use patterns of a threatened piscivorous colonial nesting waterbird, Oriental darter (Anhinga melanogaster) at Bhitarkanika mangroves.

(01 – Junior Research Fellow)

Duration: Three years

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Life Science/Forestry/Statistics/Experimental Biology/Environmental
Science/Biological Science/Wildlife Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

ß Prior research and/or field experience in Wildlife Science.
ß Interest in scientific work, high motivation, very good organizational skills and interest to work in interdisciplinary team.
ß Must possess good articulation and written communication skills in English.
ß Must be able to do field work in remote and harsh field conditions.

Description of Work

The study involves carrying out a long term ecological study on Oriental darter (Anhinga
melanogaster) in one of India’s largest mixed species colonial waterbird breeding colony at Bhitarkanika mangroves in Odisha. The study aims to investigate the breeding patterns, resource partitioning patterns, food habits and assess the threats for these birds.

Population genetic structure and gene flow in brown bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus) populations in India (Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand) and assess extent of gene flow between populations of India and Pakistan: Conservation and Forensic Implications.

(01 – Research Associate)

Duration: Three years

Essential Qualification

Ph. D. degree in Life Sciences/Wildlife Sciences/Forestry from a recognized university.

Desirable Qualification

Knowledge in occupancy, population estimation, habitat quantification and GIS.

Description of Work

Required to visit National Parks and Sanctuaries of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for data and samples collection and undertake required  analysis to understand gene flow in relation to habitat characteristics.

(01 – Research Biologist)1

Duration: Three years

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Life Sciences including Biotechnology with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Knowledge in using non-invasive genetic analysis.

Description of Work

Required to visit National Parks and Sanctuaries of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and collection of samples required to undertake DNA analysis in laboratory.

Execution of Implementation Plan - Kailash Sacred Landscape Conservation and Development Initiative (KSLCDI).

(03 – Project Biologists)

Duration: Up to 31.12.2015 (likely to be extended)

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Botany/ Forestry/Wildlife Science /Life Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Desirable qualification for Two Project Biologists (Botany – Flora or Vegetation Studies)
and One Project Biologists (Forestry) are as follows:

ß Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities. Having a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of Uttarakhand Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support.
Demonstrate ability to work in the field under harsh conditions.
ß Demonstrate a passion for floral/forestry/wildlife research and conservation.
ß Experience in basic vegetation techniques (study design, laying of plots etc.) and conversant with data analysis, ecological and statistical software.
ß Have relevant research experience and published research papers to his/her credit.
ß Experience of participation in scientific conferences/workshops/meetings.
ß Field research experience relevant to flora/ vegetation studies/forestry/wildlife science/ high altitude ecology/landscape approach to conservation

Description of Work

ß Project Biologist shall be responsible to carry out specific tasks/activities relevant to project components as assigned and submit periodic reports on such tasks.
ß Field data collection, data analysis, synthesis, and report writing.
ß To assist Task Supervisors/Project Coordinator/Nodal officer in conduct of meetings, field training, workshops and conferences as envisaged in the project.
ß Prepare scientific papers, reports and presentations and dissemination material/ project related outreach activities.
ß Any other assignment by Project Authorities.

GENERALTERMS & CONDITIONS

1. A candidate shall be allowed to submit duly filled-in application form(s) for a maximum of two advertised positions subject to his/her fulfilling the essential qualifications for the advertised positions.
2. Qualified candidates of UGC/CSIR/ICAR/WII-NET for JRFship and GATE qualified candidates for the award of JRFship in the discipline ‘Ecology and Evolution’ qualified candidate shall only be eligible to apply for the advertised JRF position.
3. Candidates appearing for the advertised positions of Research Biologist/Research Associate/Project Biologist should posses the Essential Qualification as per the details given against each position.
4. Age criteria and monthly fellowship of the advertised positions are as follows:

1. Junior Research Fellow Shall not be more than 28 years
The upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and Physically Challenged applicants.

Rs. 12,000/- + HRA as applicable.

2. Research Biologist Shall not be more than 35 years

The upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and Physically Challenged applicants.

Rs. 16,000/- + HRA as applicable.

3. Research Associate Shall not be more than 40 years

Age limit is relaxable by five years for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and
Physically Challenged applicants.

Rs. 22,000/- + HRA as applicable.

4. Project Biologist Shall not be more than 28 years

The upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to
SC/ST/OBC/Women and Physically Challenged applicants.

Rs. 16,000/- + HRA as applicable and Field allowance of Rs. 2,000/- per month, while in field.

or

Qualified candidates of UGC/CSIR/ICAR/ WIINET for JRFship and GATE qualified candidates for the award of JRFship in the discipline ‘Ecology and Evolution’ qualified candidate shall be paid Rs. 25,000/- consolidated per month.

5. Selected candidate(s) will be engaged initially for a period mentioned against each advertised position. Subsequently his/her tenure may be extended depending upon the exigencies of work at sole discretion of the Institute and satisfactory performance of the candidate.

6. Candidate(s) may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute.

Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules.
7. The selection of the candidate(s) will be based on the interview to be held on Monday, 9th February 2015 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registrations of the candidates for the advertised positions will be done from 09:00 to 10:00hrs on 9th February 2015 at WII. Late entrants after the stipulated time as mentioned above for registration will not be entertained, in any case.

8. Canvassing in any form is liable to rejection of the candidature.
9. Candidate(s) should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra-curricular  activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations. All original documents should be produced at the time of registration for document verification. Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be rejected.
10. The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
