PROGRAMME BACKGROUND

The advent of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is virtually changing Biology and Medicine. Since the first living organism was sequenced, now we have the full genomes of multiple humans, chimp, chicken, dog, yeast, thousands of bacteria, and hundreds of viruses. Now Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) is focusing on mega projects such as Million Plant & Animal Genomes Project, Million Human Genomes Project and Million Micro-ecosystem Genomes Project. NGS technologies cover diverse application areas such as de novo sequencing, genome resequencing, exome sequencing, ChIP -sequencing, etc. Thanks to the rapid development in technology in recent years, thousands of genomes involving human DNA and RNA sequencing are underway in numerous countries. Some of the major applications of NGS include Diagnostics, Drug discovery, Personalized medicine, Biomarker discovery, Energy, Agriculture and Animal research. The challenge is shifted from 'data generation' phase to 'data management and analysis' phase now. Data management and analysis remains one of the difficult challenges in the next-generation sequencing field in the coming years. The winners are not going to be chosen from the 'who sequenced it first' list but from the list of 'who came up with new ideas and better analysis tools in human healthcare, energy and agriculture'. Broadly the challenge has now shifted from sequencing to extracting knowledge from it for real world applications. This training programme will provide first hand information on NGS and also will be a starting point for entering in this advanced area.
