There is a surge in the research on understanding the involvement of gut microbiota in
causing chronic diseases. Accordingly, perturbations in the gut microbial communities is
observed in many diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity and irritable
bowel syndrome (IBS). This hints that healthy diet modifications could beneficially modulate
the microbiota and can reduce the disease risk. Our research group aims to evaluate various
dietary ingredients and functional foods for their role in modification of the gut microbiota
and in alleviating diseases using rodent models and high through-put “omics” platforms.
