UNIVERSITY OF KERALA
Inviting applications for Admission to
Finishing School in Applied Plant Science
About the Department: Department of Botany was established in the year 1959 at Kariavattom,
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. A dynamic research environment for plant research in the areas of
Biosystematics, Biotechnology, Phytochemistry and Plant Reproductive Biology is being provided
in the Department. The Department has added to its credit more than 300 doctoral degree holders,
working in reputed research labs, across the country and abroad. The department has research
projects funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology
(DST), Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Kerala State
Biodiversity Board, Kerala State Planning Board, Centre for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and
University of Kerala. The department is also well equipped with ultramodern facilities for plant
research including genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics and cell and tissue culture studies. Many
of the instruments are expected to be added in near future through DST-FIST and other
infrastructure development programs. In addition to this, Central Laboratory for Instrumentation
and Facilitation (CLIF) of the University functioning in Kariavattom Campus houses several
highly sophisticated, advanced instruments.
The Finishing School: Finishing School in Applied Plant Science (FS-APS) is a unique program
funded by the University of Kerala. The new initiative is especially aimed at carving the trained
man power in the applied fields of Botany and equivalent areas. The program will launch with the
attractive interaction of industry representatives, scientists, teachers and experienced personals of
the state. Postgraduates from different disciplines of plant sciences when trained to use modern
sophisticated equipment and exposed to advanced tools and techniques thus improve their job
opportunities. It will also bridge the employability gap between industry and academia. The
finishing school training envisages post graduates to handle many of the important techniques such
as commercial plant tissue culture, nursery management, land scaping, extraction of
phytochemicals, formulation of herbal cosmetics and handling of analytical instruments. This will
in turn strengthen them to undertaking research programs or initiating start-up. The platform will
open up more carrier opportunities to the young post graduates as Research Fellows, Project
Assistants, Young Professionals, Research Associates, Technical Assistant, and Technician in
various institutes and laboratories across the country. Ultimately, this will be helpful to generating
research interest in different areas of plant science in the upcoming generations.
