Admission to Ph.D. Programme - Autumn 2025
Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates to pursue a Ph.D. in Science.
Bose Institute also known as Basu Bigyan Mandir was set up in 1917 by Acharya Jagadish Chandra
Bose, the founder of modern science in the Indian subcontinent. It is Asia's first modern research
centre devoted to interdisciplinary research and bears a century old tradition of research excellence.
With cutting-edge research facilities and wholesome academic ecosystem Bose Institute thrives to
excel in modern day scientific research. In addition to basic and applied research in the fields of
biological and physical sciences Bose Institute offers an Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programme.
Bose

Biological Sciences (Biology of Microbes, Plant
Biology, Structural Biology and Bioinformatics, and
Disease Biology), Chemical Sciences (Chemistry and
Chemical Biology), and Physical Sciences (Theoretical
Physics and Experimental Physics).

Eligibility for Ph.D. Interview:
(1) Age: Below 28 years as on closing date of online application (relaxation of age is applicable
as per Government of India rules).
(2) Award of a Junior Research Fellowship after qualifying in a national-level test (CSIR-UGC
NET, DBT-JRF, DBT-BINC-JRF, ICMR-NET, DST-INSPIRE, JEST or equivalent) with a
validity date not earlier than 31st January 2026.
(3) Master's degree or equivalent in any of the following fields: Engineering/ Science/
Technology/ Medical with at least 55% of marks for general candidates, while 50% marks is
necessary for SC/ST/OBC (non- creamy layer)/ Differently Abled Persons and other
categories of candidates, as per UGC norms. Candidates in the final year of their master's
degree program who have also qualified in a national-level test, as mentioned above, are also
eligible to apply. However, if selected, they must submit their final mark sheet or degree
certificate at the time of joining.
(4) Candidates possessing a DST INSPIRE Fellowship must also have qualified in an appropriate
national level eligibility examination like GATE, JEST, NET LS/Assistant
Professor/admission to Ph.D. or equivalent at the time of application, for being considered in
the Ph.D. Programme in Bose Institute.
(5) Candidates who have qualified in GATE, JEST, NET LS/Assistant Professor/admission to
Ph.D., or any other national-level examination but do not hold a valid JRF or a fellowship
that could be activated through Bose Institute are eligible to apply. However, their test scores
must remain valid until at least 31
st January 2026. A limited number of fellowships offered
by Bose Institute are available and will be awarded based on performance during the interview
process.
Note:
• DST-INSPIRE candidates can only be admitted provisionally. Confirmation of their
admission to the Ph.D. programme of Bose Institute is subject to the final award of
the INSPIRE fellowship by DST. If the candidate is finally not awarded the INSPIRE
fellowship by DST, his/her provisional admission is liable to be cancelled by the
Institute.
• Candidates holding only an ICAR Fellowship are not eligible, unless they also have a
valid award letter from one of the fellowships mentioned in point (1).
Fellowship:
Admissible as per Govt. of India rules as provided by UGC/ CSIR/ DBT/DST/ICMR or Bose
Institute. Usually, these amounts are Rs. 37000 + HRA (as applicable) for JRF, and Rs. 42000 +
HRA (as applicable) for SRF.
Application Process:
• Interested candidates fulfilling the required eligibility should apply online at the URL –
https://www.jcbose.ac.in/applications/PHD-ADMISSION/. Only online applications will be
accepted.
• Applicants may save the properly filled application form in PDF format before submitting.
• Following the successful submission of the online application form, an acknowledgement receipt
will be generated and sent to the candidate’s email ID as provided in the application form.
Candidates should retain this receipt for future reference. If called for the interview, candidates
must produce this acknowledgement receipt. No candidate will be allowed to appear for the
interview without this receipt.

Important Instructions for Applicants:
1. Before applying, the applicants should ensure that they possess at least the essential
qualifications and other conditions specified in the advertisement. If a candidate is found to
be ineligible or submitted false or misleading documents, his/her candidature will be
cancelled at any stage of the selection process. It may be noted that even if a candidate
qualifies in the interview and subsequently it is found that he/she does not fulfill the eligibility
criteria, his/her candidature is liable to be rejected, even post-admission.
2. Candidates should carefully fill out all the details required in the online application form
including age, educational qualification, details of valid community certificates, etc., as no
correspondence regarding change of details will be entertained once the application is
submitted.
3. A valid Caste Certificate shall be furnished by the respective candidate to claim reservation
in SC/ST/OBC category.
4. Any candidate seeking admission under the OBC category shall furnish a certificate in the
prescribed Proforma for OBC Certificate duly signed by any one of the specified authorities.
Certificates in any other format will not be accepted. The caste certificate issuing authority
must certify that the candidate does not belong to the Creamy Layer. The prescribed proforma

5. All supporting documents (Proof of Date of Birth, Photo ID Proof indicating complete postal
address, Mark sheet of the Matriculation/Equivalent qualification, Mark sheet of the Higher
Secondary/Equivalent qualification, Mark sheet of the Graduation qualification, Mark sheet
of the Post Graduation qualification, If final marksheet is awaited then submit the last
semester marksheet, National Award of Fellowship certificate/document & Application Fee
payment receipt) are required to be uploaded and therefore, candidates are advised to prepare
the PDF files of the required documents before starting the online application process.
Documents should be scanned at a high resolution to ensure readability.
6. The prescribed eligibility criteria indicated are bare minimum and mere possession of same
will not entitle the candidate to be called for interview.
7. Candidates shall have to produce all the original documents/certificates in support of their
age, reservation category, educational qualifications along with one set of self-attested copies
of the same, at the time appearing for interview for verification, failing which he/she will not
be allowed to appear for interview.
8. The list of shortlisted candidates for interviews will be published on the website
www.jcbose.ac.in. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified of the interview date,
exclusively via email, using the email addresses provided in their application forms.
Candidates are advised to check their email regularly.
• It should be noted that mere appearance on the shortlist does not imply admission.
• The candidate needs to appear in-person for the interview.
9. The Institute reserves the right to restrict the number of candidates called for the interview to
a reasonable limit based on qualifications.
10. The Institute reserves the right to decide the mode of screening the applications for short
listing and selection.
11. The selection process will assess the candidate’s knowledge in core areas as well as the
suitability of the candidate for conducting scientific research at Bose Institute.
12. Candidates should come prepared to spend enough time at the Institute during the interview
process. They are encouraged to visit various laboratories and interact with faculty members.
Further, the candidates need to submit an option form stating their relative preference for area
of research interest ⎯ after the interaction sessions and lab visits.
13. Candidates are requested to visit the Institute website (https://www.jcbose.ac.in) regularly for
updates. No separate intimation will be sent to any candidate regarding update or amendments
in the advertisement.
14. Eligibility criteria including the upper age limit will be reckoned on the application deadline.
15. No TA/DA will be paid to the candidates for appearing for the interview.
16. The final list of selected candidates will be displayed on the Institute’s website. Selected
candidates will be informed of their assigned laboratory via registered email.
17. No interim queries in any form whatsoever will be entertained.
18. Canvassing or bringing influence in any form will disqualify the candidature.
19. Age relaxation will be given to the eligible candidates as per Govt. of India guidelines.
20. Reservation rules, as notified by UGC/ GoI for reservation of SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates,
shall be applicable.
21. The Institute Authority reserves the right to reject any or all applications and not to admit
students in all the advertised posts without assigning any reason thereof.
22. All disputes shall come under the Kolkata jurisdiction.
