AIM OF THE CONFERENCE

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder caused by defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. The disease involves disturbances in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism and chronic hyperglycemia due to insulin deficiency. Over 150 million people are diagnosed with this disease globally, and it is estimated that by the year 2025 the number will be doubled. Asian Indians have lower thresholds and are genetically more susceptible to diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of acquired blindness in the adults.

All the time scientists and clinicians are facing the critical questions: are such methods and treatments free of risks? Can the side effects be inherited by future generations? What about the financial aspects: will it be expensive or inexpensive, and how should we prioritize?

To throw light on these perspectives and questions, the School of Life Sciences at B.S Abdur Rahman University, Chennai is planning to organize a conference on predictive diabetic biomarkers and its complications on 2-3 March 2015 at the B. S. Abdur Rahman University premises.
